Before the visit
Write down a few examples: which words your child uses, how they ask for things, when you understand them and when you don’t. If you can, bring a video of your child talking at home – children are often shy at the first visit.
What happens at the visit
The speech therapist talks with you about development and plays with your child – with pictures, toys and books – to observe understanding, pronunciation and communication.
Questions you can ask
- Is my child’s speech within the range for their age?
- What exactly should I watch for at home?
- Is further assessment needed?
- How often and for how long would therapy last?
- Which exercises can we do together?
After the visit
You’ll get an explanation of the findings and a proposal for next steps. Sometimes that is just a few tips for home and a check-up in a few months.
